Voice over is nothing but the background voice you hear when you see a video. Most of them may think that voice over is not as important as the quality of the video. A survey shows that 25 percent of the video watchers watch videos only if the voice over is exciting and engaging. The voice-over you give must be interesting to pull out the audience’s attention.

Most of them think that narration and voice over are the same. Narration is the audio that describes the actions or what is happening around. The parts of creating a great voice over are

1. Audio clarity

Most of the microphones create buzzing sound. So these disturbances must be eliminated. The audience will fail to grasp the information you deliver if there is no clarity in your audio.

2. Volume

Volume is also an essential factor to be kept in mind when you give a voice over. If your volume is low, the audience might not be able to hear the audio clearly, or if your volume is high, there is a risk of distortion in your audio.

3. Pace

The speed at which you deliver your voice over is referred to as pace. You have set your pace at a neutral level, neither high nor low.

4. Tone and inflection

Your vocal tone and inflection must be friendly and interesting. It should not be as if you are imitating or pretending to be fake.

 5. Pronunciation

Ensure that you pronounce the word correctly and clearly. Speak with a natural flow, and everything will fall on point.

Essential steps to follow before you start recording

Voice over has a lot of parameters to be taken care of before you start recording.

Step1: Choosing a good microphone is very important. Don’t use the microphone inbuilt on laptops. It is suitable for Google and Skype meetings, not for giving voice Overs. At the same time, don’t spend a lot of money on buying microphones. If you prefer to buy an external mic, use pop up filters. Pop up filters removes the distracting sounds.

Step2: Find a quiet place to record. It is better to avoid areas where there are many people. Sometimes you may hear air rushing sounds because of the fan or AC, turn off these while recording to prevent disturbances.

Step3: Choose good audio recording software like Audacity. Audacity is a free digital audio workstation that enables recording and editing. You can also reduce the noise coming from the audio.

Step4: Start writing a friendly and engaging script. Before writing the whole script, write an outline of what you are going to talk about in points. Then elaborate those points and complete your script. You also have the time to practice your script. While writing the script, use simple words and phrases that reach out to the audience easily.

Step5: You must have a rehearsal before you record. It helps you to check whether all the things are correctly kept and the audio is heard clearly. It is not necessary to record the whole script, give voice over for a part of your script, and check whether the audio is clear without any disturbances.

Step6: Set your microphone at a proper place from you. You might hear weird voices from your mouth if you are too close to the microphone. The voice will be low if you place your mouth far away from the microphone. The ideal level of placing your mic is 6 to 8 inches away from it.

Step7: Optimize your audio levels to ensure that the voice is clear and not distorted.

Points to be kept in mind while recording

  • Speak slowly and don’t get panic.
  • Speak in a friendly and pleasant tone.
  • Don’t stop your flow if you make mistakes. You can edit it afterward.
  • Don’t give a voice over if you are tired. If you think that you are making a lot of errors, take a break.
